Much of mathematics is connected to one another. Each aspect builds off the others and without your previous mathematics knowledge you would not be able to continue to succeed in the subject. A fine example of this is algebra and geometry. These areas in math have been referred to as the two formal pillars, which makes their significance in education that much more evident. These two areas of math share the relationship when studying zeros of polynomial equations. This is based on the techniques and processes of algebra while using the language and problems of geometry. This is also known as algebraic geometry. This connection helps us understand the intrinsic properties of all the solutions of a system of equations.
*There are some great programs now that will help younger students visualize the relationship between the two better. GeoGebra and Geometer's Sketchpad. It will be nice to know this, so that you are able to teach all varieties of learners. Some of your students will see the connection with minimal guidance, but others may need this visualizing tool. I found a great webinar that is focused on helping students make connections between geometry and algebra using Geometer's Sketchpad. The webinar provides activity files that are discussed during it too. There is so much great information and I love how she shows you her screen and exactly what she is doin. Making Connections Between Geometry and Algebra with Sketchpad is presented by Jennifer N. Morris.
I am still investigating this connection because I am curious of what more there is there, but for now I have a brief idea of the connection and I have found an excellent way to introduce the connection to students.
